Members of the collective behind Holdin’ Court travelled to Huddersfield this Weekend just gone (via Sheffield) to check out ‘Grassroots’ at Bar 1:22. After a ridiculously long five hour journey we finally made it to Huddersfield town centre and managed to eventually locate the venue in the run down end of the shopping centre on New Street.
Hosted by Thabo of Extracurricular, the night begun with Dj Heritage playing a selection of warm up tracks followed by a 2step dance comp. Next was the open mic battle in which each emcee had 1min to rap over a beat, beatboxer or accapella (chosen by drawing a card). Of about 10 contestants there were a number who really stood out. Apologies for those whose names we didn’t catch but we recommend people def. check SoSincere on the link below.
After another dance feature, Jack Flash the current E.O.W World Champion stepped to the stage for an extremely energetic and passionate opening set alongside Dj Illas. Next up was the headline act - Leeds based Homecut with accompanying band complete with backing vocalists who played about an hours worth of material mostly from their new release ‘no freedom without sacrifice’
Homecut is a talented, conscious emcee whose performance continued to encapsulate the audience as Jack Flash had before. The final part of Homecut’s performance was a ‘live mixtape’ where the band switched between a number of classic Hip-Hop covers that got the crowd singing and dancing along in full support of the atmosphere being created.
By the end of the evening we were all in agreement it was five hours and five quid well spent. Shouts to Fish and Espre for putting us up and Jack Flash for making us feel welcome.
