Salisbury City Comity…
To conduct this interview, we traveled down to Salisbury to meet Freedom of Press and get to know them a little better. We had a quick tour of their picturesque surroundings and were then given the opportunity to fire over some questions..
Please start us off by telling us a little more about yourselves. Who you are, where you’re from and what you do…
Safe man, were a hip hop collective called Freedom of Press consisting of producer/dj Henrytha8th, Dj D-skrepency and rappers Ytv and Blammer. We’re from a town called Boscombe Down which is in Salisbury and we make that dirty Hip-Hop.
What’s the idea behind the name of the group?
It’s a play on words and represents our stand on outside interference when it comes down to the type of material we wanna press and put out.
Last year, you released ‘Yet to Verify’, how do you feel this was received by its audience and what sort of feedback did you get from your listeners?
Man we weren’t expecting the level of praise we got, to be honest me and h liked it but that doesn’t mean everyone else would, the only criticism we got was it was too short but weve fixed that by banging out the next ep so soon after.
How did the collaborative track ‘Verbal Combat’ come about?
That’s just a track full of rappers we rated and wanted to work with, there was no point in doing 5 separate collabo tracks when we could just bang them all on one and make a beast……there’s no weak links on that track! We’ve got another posse joint on the new ep featuring M.A.B, Oshea, Ramson Badbonez, Blammer and Tenchoo.
What are you all currently working on - as a group and individually?
Me and Henrytha8th are working on the verified ep blammer working on the forward movements ep henry’s working on his own mixtape and I’m also gonna be working on a joint ep with M.A.B. called the 3 letter formula.
When can we expect another release due?
The verified ep is in the final stages so that should be dropping in the next few weeks.
What are you lot listening to at the moment? Will we be surprised?
I don’t know what the others are feeling maybe blamz is listening to a bit of discarda..I’m listening to a fair bit of la coka nostra at the moment……I’m well into Sea Sick Steve tho maybe that’ll surprise people.
How does the place you reside affect your exposure? What are the benefits of living outside of a major City?
We’ve definitely had to work harder to be noticed but maybe that shows. It’s good not gettin’ too heavily influenced by the trends and fads that come with living in the big city though.
To promote your music which online outlet do you get most usage out of and why?
I know bandcamp and reverb nation are good, I don’t really get involved with that side of things though. We’ve got a lot of sound people pushing our shot via their websites like hip hop kings and stand up UK ……those guys are troopers!
So, where can people look you up?
ytvmusic.bandcamp.com you download the ep for free from there and there’s links to all our other shit.
Lastly, have you any shout outs?
Yeah shout to Holdin’ Court, Firstson Records, Sturban Clothing, Raygun Youth and all the artists we’ve worked or are working with.
You can catch Freedom of Press performing alongside Donnie Propa and Sonnyjim on Saturday April 2nd at Holdin’ Court.
